Caretaker – Part-time

Salary:  Grade 4, £7,800 – £8,406 per year

52 weeks per year, 17.5 hours per week – Split Shift, hours to be agreed.


The Broken Cross Primary Academy & Nursery offers primary and nursery education to 100 pupils in a single storey purpose built school with large playing fields and lots of outdoor space.  We are looking for an experienced Caretaker to maintain the school premises and grounds to ensure that there is a safe, healthy environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

This role is responsible for a number of key tasks: making sure that the school premises and its contents are secure; ensuring that the school is unlocked and locked safely each day; maintaining lighting and heating systems in good working condition; cleaning specific areas and monitoring the work done by the school cleaners on a daily basis; undertaking minor repairs and lifting and moving duties. The job holder is also designated as the registered key holder.

Caretaker (Primary) with subordinate staff
REPORTS TO: Head Teacher


To maintain the school premises to ensure that there is a safe, healthy environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Making sure that the school premises and its contents are secure. Ensure that lighting and heating systems are maintained in good working condition. Carry out cleaning of designated areas and monitor the cleaning carried out by Cleaners on a day to day basis. Undertake minor repair and porterage duties. The Job Holder is designated as the registered key holder.



1 Supervise subordinate staff, monitor cleaning of building and ensure work is carried out in accordance with the agreed specification.
2 Maintain the grounds in a clean and tidy condition; remove accumulated internal and external waste, sweep the grounds using mechanical or other means. Undertake designated cleaning duties during term time and carry out cleaning operations during school closure periods.



Monitor and ensure the most economic use of water, gas, oil and electricity. Check the heating installation daily during the heating season and ensure sufficient fuel supplies are maintained. Monitor the conditions of the school’s sanitary provisions for both staff and pupils.

Maintain supplies of materials and respond to problems arising from the improper use of facilities. Ensure safe storage and use of cleaning materials, in accordance with the requirements of COSHH.  Maintain and monitor Health and Safety Standards.

5 Undertake general fire precautions and security tasks at the school; locking and unlocking the school premises, routine monitoring, setting and disarming security and fire alarm systems and other security measures, etc.
6 Liaise with contractors and monitor work being carried out by them.
7 Receive delivery of supplies, furniture and parcels into the school; ensure correct distribution to the appropriate department/classroom/ teacher
Notwithstanding the detail in this job description, the job holder will undertake such work as may be determined by the Headteacher or Governing Body up to or at a level consistent with the main responsibilities of the job.





Qualifications & Experience

•      Evidence of numeracy and literacy skills and appropriate qualifications

•      Able to demonstrate supervisory experience

•      First Aid Qualification

•      Health and Safety Qualification

•      Experience of working in a school environment

•      Supervision of contract services









Knowledge & Skills

•      Able to build good relationships with students, staff and visitors

•      Able to organise and supervise staff and contractors effectively

•      Competent at basic building, repairs, maintenance and ground maintenance

•      IT literate

•      Legionella awareness

•      Knowledge and understanding the importance of Health & Safety legislation/practice (including COSHH)
